General

The Green Branch was founded to become the most efficient reforestation partner available. By developing and deploying agri-technology, we set up and guide reforestation and landscape restoration projects. Our aim is to capture as much as carbon as possible in a natural way. To finance these projects, we make Carbon Credits available to you, to offset your emissions.

In addition, when you you join The Green Branch, you create more impact than the carbon capture alone. After all, a tree is the most versatile factory in the world: It cleans the air from CO₂, restores the soil and provides food for our growing population.

Carbon offsetting is reducing or capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. Offsetting can be done in various ways, for example through more efficient cookstoves, green electricity or reforestation projects. Most offsets you can buy today originate as emissions reductions (more efficient cookstoves emit less carbon dioxide), but our offsets originate from carbon dioxide that is actually taken from the air by the ecosystems we restore!

Offsets are measured in metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (tCO₂e). Taking one ton of carbon dioxide out of the air gives you the rights to one carbon credit (see below).

A carbon credit is the equivalent of one tonne of CO₂e that has been avoided or captured through a project or reduction. This credit proves the owner has reduced their footprint by one tonne of carbon dioxide (or equivalent).

Every company eventually comes to a point where there exist only unavoidable or irreducible CO₂ emissions. By becoming carbon neutral, you are compensate just as much as you emit, resulting in a net zero balance. This way you negate your atmospheric carbon emissions and limit Earth’s temperature rise. With our reforestation and landscape restoration projects you do not only reduce carbon emissions. You also contribute to improving other ecological services and restoring biodiversity on our project location. Finally, you also serve the social side by improving local living conditions, education and quality of labour.

The Green Branch Benefits can be felt through every layer of the company. Become a frontrunner in sustainability and be an example for your industry. Participating in offset programmes will make your company more resilient and future. At the same time you are a more purposeful business that is giving back to the planet. You could even consider going carbon negative!

The Green Branch believes you can move mountains by working together. To be able to rebuild ecosystems, we work together with:

– Local landowners and farmers:
They are indispensable to the projects and are the real suppliers of the carbon credits. They do this by transitioning to a sustainable carbon farm instead of their business as usual. Together we ensure that the ecosystems will thrive and all our sustainability objectives are met while providing an improved livelihood.

–      Development partners:
To ensure the right people are working in the right places, we collaborate with multiple project developers and scientists. Our Life Science experts are mainly from Wageningen University & Research. They help us in designing the projects to achieve optimal impact. Also, we use FarmTreeTool software to model the effects of our carbon farming strategies.

–      Verification bodies:
All calculations and certifications are performed by third parties to guarantee credibility. We have partnered up with Nexio Projects, a sustainability consultant, for accurate carbon calculations. The carbon credits will be verified by the Verra VCS Standard.

–      Buyers:
Our carbon credits are sold to individuals and organizations who want to offset their CO₂ emissions. We show them their impact through The Green Branch Impact Dashboard.

– Governments, NGOs and universities:
We are constantly growing our network and attracting new partners to form an alliance for positive impact.

Reforestation

Over 75% of Earth’s land is degraded. This degradation is caused by deforestation and the climate crisis, which affects billions of people and the planet as a whole. With our reforestation and landscape restoration projects, degraded soil is restored and natural ecosystems are rebuilt. Reforestation improves the quality of human life by decreasing pollution, mitigating global warming, increasing soil quality and supporting biodiversity.

We do not just plant trees, we build ecosystems. It is not about planting as many trees as you can, but rather about cautiously researching the interactions between species. In the process of natural succession, every species plays a specific role that is indispensable to become a healthy and resilient forest. The Green Branch approach aims to kickstart this process and guide this succession to its natural climax. By collecting data and working together with local communities, we keep track of the growth of the forest and its ecological values. We use this data to continuously better our methodologies and approach.

FarmTreeTool is a software we use in developing our projects. The FarmTreeTool provides climate-resilient agriculture and (agro)forestry plans for plots of land. The software makes its projections based on specific goals. The tool captures the plots in numbers to make projections and gives ecological, social and economic insights. These are, for example: soil quality indicators, water retainment, fair labour conditions and return on investment. The software works with a basis software and multiple add-on modules for different climates, land uses and sustainability goals.

An ecosystem (with a human component) can be expressed in economic, social and ecological values. Our aim is to enhance all these values by using a holistic approach. Ecological values are the benefits to the environment, ecosystems and the biological component of farm systems. These values can be found in The Green Branch Impact Dashboard and are mostly aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The People, Planet, Profit-framework summarizes a company’s strategy in which profitable growth is achieved in combination with a positive impact on people, planet and profit. Organizations have adopted this framework to evaluate their performance in a broader perspective than only in financial returns. This is known to create a greater overall business value. The Green Branch uses this framework to ensure our sustainability goals are met in every project we develop and every choice we make.

The SDGs are set by the United Nations and represent seventeen global goals we must achieve for a more sustainable world. The Green Branch supports these goals in every project. By restoring ecosystems for local and worldwide benefits, together we can create massive impact.

Degraded land has lost some degree of its natural productivity and therefore its yield. The value of the land is affected and results in a loss of productive capacity. The rebuilt ecosystems improve soil structure, water retention and soil quality. This enhances the quality of the land and makes it increasingly more valuable. This, in turn, generates a higher return on land and increased yearly revenues.

The protection and durability of the projects is one of The Green Branch greatest responsibilities. We engage in long-term contracts with landowners to ensure the durability and protection of the projects. The farmers and landowners partake in the revenue from the carbon credits.  We work with GIS (Geographic Information System) to monitor the projects remotely through satellite imagery. Through specialized evaluation and forest management, we receive red flags if anything suspicious occurs regarding deforestation, wildfires or any other anomalies. We do not just plant trees, we build ecosystems. Growing forests takes time and patience, so we make sure that all our projects are designed to fit the criteria of today, tomorrow and the future.

For Buyers

– For businesses:
Just click on the ‘FOR BUSINESSES’ button in the navbar at the top of this page. Here you will find the link to the Business Application Form. Fill in the form to the best of your ability and we will reach out to you immediately. Our sustainability consultancy partner Nexio Projects calculates and verifies your company’s carbon footprint. After we have a clear picture of which emissions are irreducible, we design a compensation plan that fits your needs. You receive the credits as agreed upon in the terms and conditions of the purchase.

– For individuals:

Just click on the ‘FOR INDIVIDUALS’ button in the navbar at the top of this page. On this page you will find the Carbon Calculator. Follow the steps and fill in the questions as accurate as possible to discover your personal carbon footprint. When you receive the results, you can offset your emissions directly. You also have the option to offset your previous or coming years. Use our tips and read the newsletter to become more aware and reduce your footprint. We encourage you to do the test again to see if you have improved your lifestyle! An individual cannot be the owner of a carbon credit. Instead, they will reside in your name in our carbon account which is verified by Nexio Projects.

The price per carbon credit is based upon a few factors. It takes into account the region where the project is situated. Also, we must keep in mind development of the project and the monitoring plan in terms of environmental, ecological and economic impact. Generally, more stakeholders in the project cause more impact, but also ask for more fair compensation. The farmers, landowners and communities partake in the revenue as they are the most important vehicle for generating carbon credits.

When a carbon credit has been bought, we aim to restore the associated area within a year. From this point forward, we can issue the carbon credits to the receiver. Only after 3-5 years of the implementation, the verification audit will take place. This means a third party will check in on the growth of the forest. Rebuilding an ecosystem takes time and proper planning. If we are not able to deliver within two years the money will go to a Special Purpose Company that will allocate the money to similar projects to ensure the compensation goals are reached.

Under the VCS Program, auditors known as a Validation and Verification Body (VVB) are tasked with assessing projects against the VCS Program rules and if the requirements of the applied methodology are met. VVBs are qualified, independent third parties which are approved by VCS to perform validation and verification. An independent assessment process is critical to ensuring the integrity of the projects registered with the VCS Program.
